Michel Corrette (1709-1795) was a well-known French organist, composer and teacher. He was one of the principal composers of the French flute school in the period 1725-1740 along with Joseph Bodin de Bosmortier, Michael Blavet and Jacques-Christopher Naudot. A considerable portion of his output was for the flute:he wrote solo, sonatas, concertos, chamber sonatas and other small pieces of a more popular nature. In addition to his musical compositions, Corette produced many instrumental methods, catering to almost every instrument in common usage at the time: flute, violin, viola, cello, treble viol, harpsichord, recorder, oboe, bassoon, harp, guitar, mandolin, hurdy-gurdy and voice. His methods contain much useful information about musical style in his day. They also represent a summary of music pedagogy in France in the mid-eighteenth century.
